The Enshittification of Strava

Strava's global heatmap drew international scrutiny in 2018 after researchers showed it revealed the locations and layouts of military bases. The company subsequently tightened control of its platform, cutting off the third-party app Relive in 2019, moving segment leaderboards and other long-free features behind a subscription in 2020, and imposing API terms in 2024 that restricted how third-party training apps could display and process user data. A 2023 price increase rolled out with inconsistent regional pricing prompted a public apology, while newer features such as the AI-powered Athlete Intelligence launched as subscriber-only.

2019-07lock-inStrava cuts off third-party app Relive's API accessStrava terminated API access for Relive, a popular app that turned ride and run data into 3D videos, saying Relive's use of member data violated its API agreement after Relive added social features and support for competing platforms. Relive said it had complied with earlier demands and disputed Strava's characterization. DC Rainmaker

The company shifted to consistent per-country pricing with 30 days' notice before renewals. Cycling Weekly
2024-10featuresAI-powered Athlete Intelligence launches as subscriber-onlyStrava launched Athlete Intelligence, an AI feature summarizing workout data and trends, in public beta exclusively for paying subscribers. 2024-11lock-inNew API terms restrict third-party training appsStrava imposed API agreement changes barring third-party apps from showing a user's Strava data to other users, prohibiting use of API data in AI or machine-learning models, and requiring apps to complement Strava's look and feel.
